Interesting take on RTFM

I got a kick out of Andrew Gilfster's blog about RTFM. Maybe I'm a little more cynical, cause I think it's perfectly appropriate in certain aggrevated circumstances to give somebody "RTFM" as an answer.

I agree that the word may sound a little bit insulting but sometimes there is no answer other than that. Some people want to do something without reading a word about that. They ask a question not to spend time reading and want the people to answer without thinking that the person answering the question is also spending his precious time.

We do not know the background of the person asking the question on the internet. What if the person is working on Oracle for the first time.

He may not know, for example, what a log file is. For that matter many programmers I have met do not know about log files. Their knowledge and focus is on other areas including writing interfaces and reports, application knowledge, interaction skills, etc.
But for a DBA a log file is a very simple and basic thing concerned with Oracle.

So, if i want to learn about the log files i can look at the documentation and find out what i am searching for. If i ask people what a log file is, i may not be given a nice answer. Maybe asking where to find information about something is a more appropriate question.

There was a discussion on this a while ago on Oracle-l. The topic started off on a basic question about datafile and it veered off to a whole new area. The topic is "DATAFILE??" that started on Oct 18.
